Q. When do I need to replace my tyres?

A. The legal minimum tyre depth is 1.5mm in the principle grooves for the entire circumference. If the depth of these grooves is less than that - a good way to check is if the wear indicators are showing -  the tyre must be replaced. This includes the spare! No tyres can have any damage cords or treads showing. If in doubt, drop by your nearest branch for a free tyre assessment.

 

Q. Can I buy one tyre only?

A. Yes. However, the Land Transport rules now state that both tyres on the same axle must be matched in tread pattern and size so that while they can have different amounts of wear, down to the legal minimum, they must be the same size and tread pattern.
If your tyre model is no longer available you may have to meet the requirements.

 

Q. What's a tyre's profile?

A. This relates to the depth of the sidewall (the wall at the side of the tyre). The profile is expressed as a percentage of the tyre's width eg. Our 205/60R15 tyre has a profile or sidewall that is 60% of the 205mm (width). A low profile tyre is generally 50% or below, down to as little as 30% with ultra low profile tyres. Higher performance vehicles are usually fitted with tyres that have lower profiles.
While low profile tyres give you greater control and better handling on corners, they can give a slightly harder ride. Also, going to a lower profile on the same size wheels will alter your speedometer reading so you'll need to fix that up before you hit the road. Q. How can I measure my tyre tread depth?

A. You can use a tyre depth gauge. However most tyres have a tread wear indicator to help you visually identify when you are close to the tread depth limit. If you're looking at your front tyres, lock your steering to either the left or the right and look around he tread carefully, you should see a small rubber bar running across the tread grooves. The wear indicator is usually placed in the tyre at a depth of 2mm. If the tyre tread is flush with this rubber bar then it's time to replace your tyres.

 

Q. What is alignment?

A. A vehicle is said to be properly aligned when all suspension and steering components are sound and when the tyre and wheel assemblies are running straight and true. Proper alignment is necessary for even tread wear and precise steering.
